After two years of fighting it out in the state legislature, State Rep. Susan DuBose (R-Hoover) saw her “What is a Woman Act” finally become law early in the 2025 session. However, other bills she was involved with that she thought would be a much easier sell got diluted or outright rejected thanks to the efforts of associations and lobbying groups.

Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth lambasted some House lawmakers on Wednesday, after the State House Government Committee voted down a bill allowing public school students to participate in off-campus religious and character instruction during school hours.

On Wednesday, the House Education Committee voted down legislation allowing students to receive off-site religious instruction as part of their regular education.

For those wanting their children to receive religious instruction as part of their school learning while avoiding the murky waters of the church and state distinction, State Rep. Susan DuBose’s (R-Hoover) bill authorizing students to attend religious instruction during the school day seems like a no-brainer.

The future of a bill allowing elective credits for students to attend religious instruction during the school day is still shaky despite receiving an endorsement from the state's political leadership.

Religion stands above the culture, but it also permeates the culture. Students whose education is devoid of any kind of religious instruction emerge from school with an unbalanced, one-sided worldview.
