Forty-five illegal aliens are currently on hold in Madison County Jail, awaiting their date with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
WAFF reported that ICE had identified 45 illegal aliens in the jail out of 1,200 inmates — roughly 4% — and placed them on an ICE hold. Some of the charges include murder, assault, drug trafficking, and traveling to meet a minor for sex. Whether those 45 bond out or serve their sentence, their ultimate fate will likely be deportation out of the U.S.
"If one of those 45 were to make bond, ICE is not going to allow them to walk in our community free waiting trial, they're going to deport them immediately," Madison County Assistant District Attorney Tim Gann told WAFF.
Brent Patterson, a spokesman with the Madison County Sheriff's office, said these were criminals "committing serious, heinous crimes" and, as such, would be "dealt with by the letter of the law."
Patterson said in the past, ICE wouldn't bother picking up most illegal aliens on hold in the jail. However, under the Trump administration, it's a different story.
"Under the Biden administration, it was one or two out of 10; under this current administration right now, they're taking everything we got," Patterson told WAFF.
