Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Sebastian Carrillo, 54, and his son, Sebastian Gideon, 27, are both facing charges in connection to alleged Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan fraud and tax evasion.

Carrillo, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office employee, was indicted on one count of first-degree theft by deception. Prosecutors allege he received $20,415 in PPP loans under false pretenses.

Federal documents show the loan was approved on May 27, 2021, for "activities related to real estate."

“He also faces three counts of attempting to evade or defeat income tax on unreported income for tax years 2020, 2021 and 2022,” the AG’s office said in a press release.

Gideon was also indicted for one count of first-degree theft by deception. Marshall’s Special Prosecutions Division alleged Gideon obtained a $18,123 PPP loan under false pretenses. That loan was approved on April 22, 2021, for “other automotive mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance.”

Gideon also faces two counts of subscribing to a false tax return for tax years 2020 and 2021, and one count of attempting to evade or defeat income tax on unreported income for tax year 2022.

Carrillo and Gideon were booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Friday, and both posted a $20,000 bond.

Marshall said the case was investigated by his office and the Alabama Department of Revenue.

Carrillo faces up to 35 years in prison and up to $330,000 in fines if convicted.

Gideon faces up to 31 years in prison and up to $330,000 in fines if convicted.

Both Carrillo and Gideon are considered innocent until proven guilty.
