The Alabama Port Authority and CSX broke ground Thursday on the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF).

The project was announced in 2022 and was an effort by former U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Tuscaloosa).

The facility will allow trucks and trains to easily connect central Alabama to the Port of Mobile. The port is a landing and takeoff site for global containers packed with goods. It adds over $98 billion in economic value to the state each year and provides over 351,000 jobs.

The Alabama Port Authority said the Montgomery facility will enhance freight mobility and stimulate economic growth in the state. It will look similar to the Mobile ICTF.

The area surrounding the ICTF has generated over $3 billion in investments since the 2022 announcement.
