Nearly all of Alabama's Republican congressional candidates received high rankings and endorsements from the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) ahead of November's election, displaying voting records considered supportive of gun rights and the Second Amendment.
The NRA-PVF recently released its endorsements in Alabama alongside scorecards ranking the state's federal lawmakers based on their voting records on Second Amendment issues.
U.S. Reps. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville), Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) and Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) received "A" ratings, which the NRA said indicated a "Solidly pro-gun candidate. A candidate who has supported NRA positions on key votes in elective office or a candidate with a demonstrated record of support on Second Amendment issues."
The only non-incumbent candidate to receive an endorsement from the NRA was political newcomer Caroleene Dobson, who received an "A" ranking based solely on the candidate questionnaire due to her non-existent voting record. Her opponent, Shomari Figures, received an "F" rating.
U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Saks) was the sole recipient of an "A+" rating on the scorecard, which it defines as "A legislator with not only an excellent voting record on all critical NRA issues but who has also made a vigorous effort to promote and defend the Second Amendment."
Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) received an "F" rating by the NRA, as did Palmer's Democratic opponent, Elizabeth Anderson. Moore's Democratic opponent, Tom Holmes, received a "?" rating along with Sewell's Republican challenger Robin Litaker.
The NRA said a "?" rating means the candidate refused to answer the NRA-PVF candidate questionnaire, made contradictory statements, or took positions that were inconsistent with the candidate's answers to the questionnaire.
"This year's elections are more important than ever for the future of our country and our Second Amendment rights," The NRA said. "The only protection against attacks on our Second Amendment rights and the democratic process is your vote. And this year, in particular, we will need each and every individual gun owner's vote in every precinct and every district across the country. We're all concerned about the direction this country is heading, and we need to make sure that our children and grandchildren enjoy the same freedoms that we do. Your rights are within range. That's why it all comes down to your vote."
