On Monday, Alabama GOP chairman John Wahl predicted a Trump victory in the general election while acknowledging an uphill battle for Republicans to secure Alabama's second congressional seat.
While a presidential winner may not be declared Tuesday night, Republicans nationwide have expressed exceeding optimism that Trump will defeat his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.
During a Monday night prayer call hosted by the Alabama Federation of Republican Women, Wahl and Attorney General Steve Marshall shared thoughts and prayers ahead of the busy Election Day.
Wahl began by expressing confidence in a Trump win, saying that God's obvious intervention in two assassination attempts against the former president showed a divine plan.
"I am claiming and I really do believe that we will have victory tomorrow," Wahl said. "I think the polling, things we're seeing on the ground, the trending, a lot of things are moving in our direction. But I think the most important thing is that it sure looks like God has spared Donald Trump's life twice. And if he spared his life, I hope, and I pray that he has something for him to do in our country."
He continued, "I always talk when I'm out on the campaign trail about how the battle we're in is not a political battle; if we're honest with ourselves, this is a spiritual battle. It's a spiritual battle between light and darkness, and freedom and slavery. And freedom is on the ballot."
Shifting from the national to state elections, Wahl was notably less optimistic about a Republican victory in the state's newly redrawn second congressional district. Last year, the federal courts mandated a rewrite of the state's congressional lines. The resulting electoral shuffle led to incumbent AL-2 U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) vying for the first congressional seat, snatching the GOP nomination from incumbent U.S. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) in the GOP runoff. Political newcomer Caroleene Dobson will now face Democrat and former Obama staffer Shomari Figures.
According to Wahl, while a Republican victory for the seat is possible, it will be a hard-fought battle over minute percentage points at the polls.
"I want to start by saying, pray hard," Wahl said. "You know, this one, in the physical realm, is going to be very hard. The latest polling has her down by about five points, which is winnable. With the right turnout, it is possible, but it is going to be a hard race."
"There's hope, but it's going to be very hard tomorrow," he concluded.
