The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) held its annual Alabama Republican Party State Executive Committee meeting on Saturday at the Riverchase Galleria's Hyatt Regency in Hoover.
Approximately 400 members of the Executive Committee were in attendance for the elections, during which chairman John Wahl and vice chairman Joan Reynolds were both reelected by acclamation.
According to the ALGOP bylaws, "The State Committee shall elect for two (2) year terms of office (and until their successors are elected) a State Chairman, a vice-chairman, a secretary, a treasurer, and such other officers as the State Committee deems appropriate. It shall not be necessary for such officers to be selected from among the members of the State Committee. The State Chairman shall be the chief executive officer of the State Committee. The secretary shall be the State Committee's recording officer and the custodian of the State Committee's non-financial records. The treasurer shall report on the financial affairs of the State Committee and shall be the custodian of its financial records."
Carol Jahns was reelected secretary, defeating Kerrick Whisenant. Sallie Bryant did not seek reelection as treasurer. Reed Phillips was elected in a race against Kimberly Cook.
Phillips is the former executive director of ALGOP, who stepped down last November and joined BullsEye Public Affairs.
According to a spokesman for ALGOP, the regional chairs remain unchanged. There were several changes among the congressional district chairs.
The primary functions of each Congressional District Committee are to assist and promote party candidates for Congress and party candidates for state offices. They also help the chairman as requested.
A comparison of the newly elected chairs vs. those listed on the ALGOP website shows:
CD1: Jackie Gay replaces State Rep. Matt Simpson (R-Daphne).
CD2: William Rayborn was reelected
CD3: State Rep. Joe Lovvorn (R-Auburn) replaces State Sen. Lance Bell (R-Pell City).
CD4: Bonnie Sachs was reelected
CD5: State Rep. Ben Harrison (R-Cartwright) replaces former U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville).
CD6: Chris Brown was reelected
CD7: Vaughn Poe replaces Pierce Boyd.
Those elected in new positions will also be joining the Steering Committee in addition to their new responsibilities. That committee is the main governing body of the Alabama Republican Committee. The 21-member committee meets once each quarter and helps define the party's direction while preserving and promoting its values. The Committee is comprised of the state chairman, two RNC members, the vice chairman, three regional chairs, a secretary, a treasurer, and representatives from each of the seven congressional districts.
