The Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) announced Monday that executive director Reed Phillip is stepping down after nearly 10 years with the party.
Phillips took the reigns in 2020 following the sudden passing of then-chief of staff Harold Sachs. Before that, he served as the party’s political director.
ALGOP announced that Phillips was leaving to “pursue an exciting new opportunity.” No further details were given. ALGOP gave Phillips an appreciative farewell, boasting of the party boosting its share of partisan elected offices across the state from 54% to over 73% during his tenure.
"Reed Phillips has been an integral part of the Alabama Republican Party’s success," ALGOP chairman John Wahl said. "His strategic vision and tireless efforts have helped lead our Party to new heights, and his contributions will leave a lasting legacy. While we will miss his leadership and friendship, we are excited for him as he takes on this new opportunity. We wish him nothing but success in the future."
"It has been an incredible honor to serve the Alabama Republican Party and work alongside so many talented and dedicated individuals," Phillips said. "I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to help grow our Party and for the friendships I’ve built with members of the State Executive Committee and grassroots leaders across the state. I look forward to seeing the Party continue to thrive in the years ahead."
ALGOP announced that Shannon Whitt, the party’s director of finance and special events, would be stepping into the role of executive director. Wahl credited Whitt with facilitating a string of “record-breaking fundraising events,” saying Whitt is an “exceptional leader with a proven track record of success.”
"I want to thank Chairman Wahl for his confidence and support," Whitt said. "It is an honor to step into this role and continue the work of growing our Party and promoting conservative values across Alabama. I am excited to build on our successes and look forward to working with our incredible team to achieve even greater accomplishments."
