Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) chairman John Wahl recently spoke with representatives of the Alabama Education Association (AEA) regarding public comments on homeschooling legislation.
"I was pleased to hear directly from the AEA that they have no plans to pursue additional reporting or enrollment requirements for homeschool families," Wahl said.
Alabama Daily News quoted Alabama Education Association executive director Amy Marlowe, who said, "It seems like we've gone backwards because we used to have laws in Alabama where, as a last stop, the school system could find kids that went missing."
"Maybe they moved or are homeschooling, but that was an extra safety net to make sure Alabama's children were safe."
In a written statement, Wahl pushed back on that, saying, "Alabama families don't need government bureaucrats or the Department of Education to keep their children safe. Parents know what's best for their families and are fully capable of making those decisions without state intrusion or oversight."
"We had a positive conversation, and I want to thank them for their willingness to talk and their commitment to these values. I appreciated their assurance that there were no plans to support increased regulations or government strings on homeschoolers in Alabama," Wahl said.
"Over the past few years, the Alabama Republican Party has developed a constructive working relationship with the AEA. They did not oppose our efforts on school choice and curriculum transparency, and we've continued to maintain open lines of communication," he explained.
"While we don't always agree, our discussions have remained grounded in honesty and professionalism. Our priority has always been serving the people of Alabama — fostering dialogue, encouraging healthy debate, and advancing what's best for Alabama's families and students."
"I think it's important that we work together to serve the people of Alabama," Wahl said. "There's common ground in wanting every child in our state to have a safe and high-quality education. I believe the first step in accomplishing that goal is protecting the fundamental right of parents to make educational decisions for their families without unnecessary government interference."
Wahl also addressed the growing number of Alabama families choosing alternatives to public schools this year, reaffirming the Alabama Republican Party's unwavering commitment to parental choice and educational freedom.
"The Alabama Republican Party strongly supports parental rights and the homeschooling community," Wahl said.
The ALGOP party platform states, "We support options for learning, including: public education, parochial and private schools, charter schools, home-schooling, magnet schools, and technical and vocational education. We recognize and support parental rights in their child's education."
As a strong advocate for free markets, Wahl encouraged the public school system to focus on improving its services and earning back the trust of Alabama parents, rather than increasing government regulations on educational alternatives.
"The public school system shouldn't be worried about parents choosing other educational options—or trying to regulate those who do," Wahl said. "Instead, they should concentrate on improving the quality of education and academic performance for public school students. Competition in education is healthy, and we should embrace it. It drives excellence and ensures that every child in Alabama has access to the best possible learning environment."
Wahl reaffirmed that protecting parental authority remains one of the Alabama Republican Party's highest priorities. "Our Party will always stand with parents and defend their God-given right to raise and educate their children according to their own faith, values, and convictions," he concluded.
