Yet the current narrative suggests otherwise – that homeschool families who accept education funds are somehow ushering in regulation or contributing to the loss of homeschooling freedom. That claim places an unfair burden on families who are simply trying to make the best educational decisions for their children.

It’s high time we foster the idea that parents, not teachers, know best how to educate their children. School choice, done well, gives parents the freedom to do just that.

Despite Alabama's relatively lax law regarding home schooling, some parents who have taken their child out of public school to be home-schooled have reported receiving concerning messages from school staff or school board members, some even threatening to refer parents to legal authorities.

“The co-op kind of helps do all that behind the scenes work and provides the parents with the assignments and the lesson plans and all of that instead of the parent having to figure it out on their own,” said Sarabeth Schneider.
