On Monday, Americans for Prosperity Alabama (AFP-AL) released three House endorsements, including State Rep. James Lomax (R-Huntsville), over former U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville), a candidate challenging the incumbent in a hotly contested Republican primary set for May 19.
Brooks has previously been lauded by Americans for Prosperity for being one of the most conservative legislators in the nation. In 2013, Yellowhammer News reported that Brooks was one of fewer than two dozen recipients of a perfect 100% on the AFP Scorecard, earning an A+.
In Monday's endorsement, AFP-AL endorsed two incumbents and one challenger.
The release did not name or acknowledge Brooks or his record.
It also did not mention incumbent, State Rep. Jim Carns (R-Vestavia Hills) in House District 48, who is being challenged by Lloyd Peeples.
In a Baldwin County race, AFP-AL backed two-term incumbent State Rep. Matt Simpson (R-Daphne) over challenger Danielle Duggar.
“James Lomax, Matt Simpson, and Lloyd Peeples will be champions for Alabama families. They will advocate for educational freedom, as well as regulatory, tax and health care reforms. AFP-AL looks forward to leveraging its capabilities to connect with voters and share how these candidates will help expand freedom and opportunity for all Alabamians," the release states.
"Lomax is in his first term and was recently appointed as House Majority Whip, demonstrating that he is already capable of being a strong policy champion. He has supported school choice, the end of judicial deference, lower taxes, and regulatory reform," the statement read.
"Simpson has served in the Alabama House of Representatives since 2018. Since then, he has been a strong ally on legislation relating to school choice, regulatory reform, judicial deference and tax reform," it continued.
"Peeples is a former assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama where he spent 18 years as a federal prosecutor. He is also a small business owner and an outspoken advocate for education, regulatory and health care reform," it said about Carne's challenger.
