Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer is not endorsing Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato for reelection, according to a spokesman for the University of Alabama athletics department.

A recent Brocato campaign mail piece featured a photo in its upper right corner, showing Brocato with DeBoer and columnist Steve Flowers.

The image is also prominently featured on Brocato's "Get Involved" page.

The image was taken at the Hoover mayor's annual prayer breakfast on May 6.

A spokesman from the University of Alabama Athletics told 1819 News in a written statement, "Coach DeBoer has not been contacted for a political endorsement of any kind."

The back side of the same flyer, featuring DeBoer, also included U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery). Britt's office said, "We have not endorsed in that race, and will not be endorsing in that race," her office stated. The office also confirmed that Britt did not give her permission to Brocato for his campaign to use her image.

The majority of Brocato's endorsements are from out-of-town officials, including Mayor Sandy Stimpson of Mobile, Mayor Ron Anders of Auburn, former Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Mayor of Tuscaloosa, Walt Maddox, and the mayors of Dothan and Mountain Brook.

He also has the support of the Birmingham Association of Realtors and County Commissioner Lindsey Allison.

His opponent, Nick Derzis, has secured and announced the endorsements from Attorney General Steve Marshall, State Attorney Danny Carr, Judge Mike Bolin, former Hoover Mayor and Jefferson County Manager Tony Petelos, Tynette Lynch, former Director of Tourism for Hoover, Coach Andy Kennedy, Elizabeth Tanner, a mother of three, and lifelong Hoover resident, and former Hoover Executive Director Allen Pate.

Most notably, however, among Derzis' supporters are four out of seven sitting city councilors who work day-to-day with Brocato, along with multiple council candidates.
