Members of the state’s Certificate of Need Review Board voted on Wednesday to approve a new ambulatory surgery center in east Montgomery.
Southern Orthopaedic Surgery Center will develop a freestanding, non-hospital-based, limited multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center in Montgomery specializing in orthopedics. Upon completion, the center will have six operating rooms, two procedure rooms, nine pre-operative rooms and 14 phase I recovery stations.
Baptist Medical Center South and Jackson Hospital opposed the project. Board members voted to delay a vote on the project in November.
Officials with Southern Orthopaedic have said the new center is necessary to serve Montgomery’s aging population and growing surrounding areas. The new center will be located on Halcyon Pointe Drive and is expected to open within the next two years.
“We’re pleased that we can now move forward with building this innovative outpatient facility. This will help thousands of residents of Central Alabama who need orthopedic procedures but don’t need to be treated at a full-service hospital,” Jenna Roton, CEO of Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons, said in a statement on Wednesday after the vote.
