Civil rights attorney Harry Daniels released video of an arrest by Andalusia Police that he claims was unlawful and unnecessary.
Twyla Stallworth was taken into custody after refusing to produce identification to police and resisting arrest.
Stallworth’s son videoed the incident in which he can be heard begging his mother to calm down.
According to reports, Stallworth called the police for a noise complaint about a neighbor. When the neighbor didn’t turn down his music, she set her car alarm off in response. Police responded and questioned Stallworth.
“Frustrated because Officer Barton threatened to cite and arrest her for the car alarm but did nothing to address her multiple complaints, Stallworth pointed out the disparity as Barton was returning to her police cruiser suggesting it was racially motivated,” Daniels said in a press release. “Stallworth is Black while the neighbor playing his music loudly is white.”
The incident happened on February 23, and attorneys said Stallworth was held in jail for 15 hours on charges of obstruction, resisting arrest and attempting to elude.
Attorneys say Stallworth was not required to show her ID because she was at her home. They say the officer shoved Stallworth onto the couch during the arrest.
