CNN reworded parts of an article and issued a correction at the bottom after trying to cast doubt on a story U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) told during her response to the State of the Union address.
The story, which was likely about Karla Jacinto, who has been public for years about her story of being sex trafficked by an organized crime ring, highlighted what cartels in Mexico are capable of. During the response, Britt said she met a woman when she visited the border and spoke with her about her experiences.
The purpose of Britt’s mention of the story, although she never used Jacinto’s name, was to point out the fact that cartels are running rampant and victimizing people and how secure borders can help protect Americans.
Still, CNN attempted to discredit Britt and her encounter with Jacinto. They spoke with Jacinto, who said the two met during an event and that it was never a one-on-one meeting.
That story has since been updated, and clarification has been added. Britt never implied she met with the woman one-on-one.
“CLARIFICATION: This story has been updated to clarify the circumstances of Britt’s meeting with Jacinto,” the CNN disclaimer reads.
A Fox News article reporting the correction also suggested Britt is a potential running mate for President Donald Trump’s campaign.
