The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reopened driver's license offices Tuesday after eight consecutive days of being closed.
According to a press release from ALEA, driver’s license offices across the state have successfully switched over to the new ALEA Driver License system, LEADS.
Gov. Kay Ivey announced the new driver’s license program in February. Driver’s license offices were closed on April 18 so new hardware could be installed.
“This is only the beginning of ALEA’s overall initiative to utilize technology to advance and provide enhanced quality service for the citizens of our great state,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor.
According to Driver License Division Chief Jonathan Archer, citizens will have access to various options and services thanks to LEADS. Archer said citizens can now pre-apply for driver's licenses before visiting a local office.
“This is a new feature that we feel, if used by citizens, will make a tremendous difference for our Driver License Examiners’ capability to provide improved quality service," Archer said.
“I would also like to remind everyone this is a brand-new system that our employees will be given their first opportunity to use in the coming days,” said ALEA Department of Public Safety director Colonel Jimmy Helms. “We would like to ask that the citizens of our great state continue to use the same level of patience and understanding which were utilized over the course of the previous week.”
