Montgomery Fire and Rescue announced on Monday that a newborn baby was "safely and anonymously surrendered" at its Safe Haven Baby Box last month.
According to Montgomery Fire and Rescue, the box had only been installed for three months before being utilized.
Tuscaloosa News reports that the baby was less than a week old.
Assistant fire chief Craig Carr, Jr. said, according to the outlet, "She was healthy, well-fed. ... She was taken to Baptist South to be checked out."
The fire department wrote on Facebook, "We are deeply grateful to the courageous mother who, in a time of crisis, made the difficult decision to seek help and ensure her child’s safety. While her identity will remain completely anonymous, her decision represents love, bravery, and hope."
The box is at Fire Station Number 10 on South Court Street and was opened in May.
