The Go Wide I-65 Coalition, a newly formed non-profit dedicated to widening Alabama's Interstate 65, announced a multi-state campaign on Friday to draw attention to the needed updates to the state's often congested main highway.

The coalition began putting up Billboards on Friday throughout that state on I-65, advocating for the expansion. George Clark, the coalition's executive director, said the campaign is designed to increase awareness of the urgency of widening I-65 to "accommodate the increasing traffic congestion of the state's important transportation corridor."

"I-65 is the primary artery of the state of Alabama and literally carries the state's economic lifeblood every day," Clark said.

The widening of I-65 has been a contentious issue in the state. Lawmakers, namely Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth, have butted heads with Gov. Kay Ivey and the executive branch over the administration's lack of attention to what is perceived as a growing problem on the state's roadways.

The coalition was begun by Clark, the founder and former president of Manufacture Alabama. More than a decade ago, Clark worked with associations, businesses, industries and legislative committees to evaluate Alabama's infrastructure needs and authored plans to guide the state in meeting those needs.

The coalition supports Ainsworth's long-time recommendation for a three-lane I-65 through the state, both North and Southbound.

"Lt. Governor Ainsworth has taken the lead in advocating for this essential infrastructure project," Clark said. "Our campaign utilizes the foundation he has established."

"Our goal is to grow this campaign into a much bigger coalition and see expansion adopted by the political leadership of Alabama. It is perhaps the most important economic development project Alabama can adopt," he added.
