Three leading homeschool organizations in Alabama are thanking Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) chairman John Wahl for not just taking the initiative to reach out to the Alabama Education Association (AEA) but for making that conversation public knowledge.
The AEA recently gave Wahl assurances that they would not pursue legislation adding additional reporting or enrollment requirements for homeschool families — something the groups say is a major victory for educational freedom.
In several radio interviews this week, Wahl described facing pushback from people within the party who are critical of any trust in or conversations with the AEA after he released a press statement highlighting assurances he received from the group that they would not seek to undermine the rights of homeschool parents.

“The Alabama Homeschool Alliance applauds John Wahl’s actions fighting for parental rights and educational freedom,” said Sarah Sanchez, director of the Alabama Homeschool Alliance, in a written statement. “The homeschool community often gets overlooked, and we are thankful for a political leader willing to speak up on our behalf. When powerful education lobbyists start suggesting more government regulations over homeschooling, it sends chills through every family that values their educational freedom. We are grateful that Chairman Wahl didn’t wait until the legislative session but instead took immediate action to address this issue.”
Erin Wainwright, president of South Alabama Homeschooling, also praised Wahl for taking a proactive stand. “We want to thank ALGOP Chairman John Wahl for his continued dedication to protecting parental rights and homeschool freedom here in Alabama. His recent efforts to build positive relationships while standing firm against unnecessary oversight show a real understanding of what makes homeschooling thrive — freedom, flexibility, and family-led education. Alabama’s homeschool community has proven time and again that parents are fully capable of providing an excellent, individualized education without state interference. Our strength comes from that freedom — from diversity, creativity, and the ability to tailor education to each child’s needs. We’re grateful for leaders like John Wahl who understand that true educational freedom means trusting parents, not bureaucracies, to guide the next generation.”
Gus Tucker, president of Homeschool Alabama, echoed that same message, “Our freedom to educate our children according to our convictions and values is not negotiable. John Wahl’s bold stance reminds the AEA — and everyone else — that parents, not bureaucrats, are the ultimate authority over their children’s education. We deeply appreciate his consistency and his courage on this issue.”
“The Alabama Republican Party will always stand with families and defend their God-given right to raise and educate their children according to their own values and convictions,” Wahl said in a statement last week.
Homeschool leaders emphasized that Wahl’s work to secure a commitment from the AEA not only reaffirmed the Party’s platform but also served as a warning to any effort to erode educational freedom in Alabama.
“Chairman Wahl is showing that the conservative movement in Alabama isn’t just talking about defending freedom — it’s actually doing something about it,” Sanchez added.
