Alabama has always prided itself on being a state that values strong families and conservative principles. That’s why it’s disappointing to see State Rep. Jim Hill (R-Moody), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, choose to place HB53 on the committee calendar instead of HB229. This decision undermines a core tenet of the Republican Party: protecting family values and ensuring that children have the opportunity to maintain meaningful relationships with both parents.

HB229, championed by State Rep. Kenneth Paschal (R-Pelham), is a Shared Parenting Bill designed to promote equal parenting rights, allowing children to continue nurturing relationships with both parents, even after difficult family situations like divorce or separation. The bill stands as a testament to Alabama’s commitment to fairness, balance, and family unity.

However, HB53, a watered-down version of HB229, has been placed on the agenda instead. To add insult to injury, HB53 is supported by a Democrat, making it all the more perplexing why a Republican committee chair would prioritize this bill over a more robust, Republican-backed solution. HB53 fails to adequately address the challenges faced by parents and children struggling to maintain bonds under existing custody laws. It simply does not go far enough in ensuring that both parents have the opportunity to be involved in their children’s lives.

This decision contradicts the fundamental principles that Republicans stand for: strengthening families, ensuring fairness, and protecting parental rights. By choosing to advance a Democrat’s diluted version of this critical legislation, Hill is missing an opportunity to champion a bill that would make a real difference in the lives of countless Alabama families.

Our state needs strong leadership that reflects our values, not political maneuvering that compromises on the well-being of our children. It’s disappointing to see a Republican leader prioritize a weaker alternative over a bill that truly supports Alabama’s families.

The College Republican Federation of Alabama stands firmly behind HB229 because we believe in strong families, equal parenting rights, and maintaining meaningful relationships between parents and their children. It’s time for Hill and the House Judiciary Committee to do the right thing and give HB229 the hearing it deserves.

Alabama’s families deserve better, and they deserve HB229.
