In a wide-ranging interview with "1819 News: The Podcast," Alabama first congressional district GOP candidate Jerry Carl condemned illegal immigration while arguing that the legal system needed fixing to allow more people into the United States the "proper way."

"It's hard to find a roofer anymore. You know, of course, in Mobile, they're rolling up on job sites and checking green cards and, you know, they're catching them all running out the back. And we want those bad players out of here. But we've got to figure out how to get that labor force back in here somehow," he said.

Carl blamed the Biden administration for intentionally surging the border to import a permanent Democrat voter class.

"When you can flood those people in, you can get them a voter's card, you can get them at the polls, because that's doable, very doable. You can swing certain areas of this country, and when you swing it, you can take California, New York and drive the entire country. So we, as legislators, Democrats and Republicans, have got to start focusing on how do we fix it."

Carl said minor sex trafficking across the border was particularly egregious and something lawmakers should be focusing on and fighting against.

"We have to fix it. And half your listeners are going to love that idea, and the other half are going to absolutely hate it. They're going to be saying, 'Oh, they're just opening the borders, letting people in.' No, no, that's the last thing. We've already gone through that. That didn't work very well. Now, let's get the bad people out right now. Let's focus on getting as many illegal — the word is illegal — immigrants that are in this country, let's get them out and let's show them how they can come back in this country the right way, the proper way. And we can do it. But we, the elected officials in Washington, have got to be willing to bite the bullet and do that."

He continued, "We've got to fix the system we've got, which is broke. So I started a conversation with that, you know, it's broke. We've got to fix it. But you've got to also get enough elected officials up there to say it's broken. We need to fix it. Start focusing on it. Because it's a very unpopular topic to talk about in Washington."
