Former Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill is considering running for chairman of the Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP).

Announced candidates in the ALGOP chairman's race include Joan Reynolds, State Rep. Scott Stadthagen (R-Hartselle) and Stan Cooke. An election for the position will be held on March 7 at the ALGOP State Executive Committee meeting in Hoover.

Merrill told 1819 News on Thursday, “It is true that I’m considering that. We’ve not released any kind of an official statement or anything like that at this particular time but something will be forthcoming in the next couple of days or so.”

“There’s a number of people that have reached out to me and asked me to consider this as an opportunity for leadership in our state, and I’m certainly doing that,” he added. “I’m considering that as an option and trying to talk to as many people as I can that would have interest in that position and have a vote to determine who that person would be. For that purpose, I’m being intentional about talking to people and seeing what their thoughts are.”
