The release of videos from Jan. 6, 2021, has shed light on a series of concerning events that transpired on that fateful day.

The evident misuse of government power, targeting members of the U.S. House and Senate expressing valid objections to the contested 2020 election, has raised significant questions about the actions taken by federal agencies. The impact of those actions extended to over a million citizens who gathered in Washington, D.C., that day, driven by concerns about alleged election irregularities and the desire to prevent what they perceived as a stolen election.

The aftermath has left lasting consequences, marked by persistently escalating tensions.

The initiative by House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson to release numerous hours of videos is a crucial step toward transparency. These videos, both released and anticipated, should serve a dual purpose: prosecuting and convicting those genuinely responsible for criminal activities, and exonerating individuals unjustly charged, including U.S. citizens convicted for exercising their right to protest.

While a small number of protestors engaged in the destruction of property, the released videos provide compelling evidence of the largely peaceful and non-violent nature of the protestors outside the Capitol—until law enforcement's use of pepper balls, rubber bullets, and tear gas without warning. Inside the Capitol, many protestors displayed a calm and orderly demeanor as they moved through the halls.

Amid these events, tragic incidents unfolded, including the fatal shooting of protestor Ashli Babbitt. Another protestor was crushed by the crowd, while two men peacefully demonstrating outside the Capitol passed away from natural causes. These incidents underscore the complexity and gravity of the situation.

The suspicion of a manipulated narrative by the former House Select Committee on Jan. 6, coupled with accusations against former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, calls for a thorough and unbiased investigation. Establishing a new House Committee focused on the events of the Jan. 6 protest is imperative. This committee should meticulously examine the actions of Pelosi and her previous committee, with subpoenas issued to obtain records and communications. Those found responsible for any wrongdoing should face appropriate charges.

As more videos become available, correcting false convictions and filing new charges for criminal activities is crucial. The need to get to the truth is paramount to ensuring justice, accountability, and transparency in the aftermath of Jan. 6. An unbiased inquiry, free from political influence, is essential for rebuilding public trust and understanding the full scope of what transpired on that historic day.
