When President Trump suggested buying Greenland, the media reaction was predictable. They laughed, they joked, and they dismissed it as "crazy." But as I look at the map of the 21st century, I don’t see a joke – I see an opportunity to secure America’s future.
Big ideas always sound crazy to small minds. As a Frederick Douglass Republican, the real question isn't whether the idea is crazy; it's whether it is a smart move.
Planning for the Next Century
America is not built by leaders who are afraid of what critics say. The Louisiana Purchase was mocked in its time. Alaska was dismissed as "Seward’s Folly" – a worthless block of ice. Today, we know better. Those are priceless assets that secure our continent.
Greenland is our next frontier. It is the largest island in the world, sitting right at the heart of the Arctic. As ice melts and new shipping routes open, the nation that controls Greenland will control the flow of global trade between America, Europe and Asia.
The Reality of Our Rivals
I am not the only one who sees this. China knows it. Russia knows it. Both countries are moving fast to build a permanent base of power in the Arctic. While they act, our media only makes jokes. This isn't about Trump being crazy or egotistical. It is about protecting American interests before other countries take the lead.
Resistance from Our Allies
Many of our European and NATO allies are against this. Denmark views it as a slight to their sovereignty, and many of our allies in Europe prefer a status quo that doesn't "rock the boat."
While I value our allies, a nation must ultimately look to its own security. Relying on the permission of foreign powers to protect our own economy is a strategy for weakness. Our allies often prioritize historical boundaries; I prioritize the future security of the American Republic.
This is not about "taking over" Greenland. It is a geographic purchase. Just like when we bought Alaska or the Louisiana Territory, this would be a legal deal to secure land that is vital to our national safety. A country that cannot secure its trade routes or defend its resources will eventually lose its freedom.
A Vision for Greenland
Greenland is rich in oil, gas, and – most importantly – rare earth minerals. Right now, we are dangerously dependent on China for the materials that power our phones, our computers, and our national defense.
America should never have to beg a foreign power for the resources we need to survive. For too long, we have let our supply chains stay tied to the whims of our enemies, like China. They do not share our values, and they actively work to pull us down.
A nation that depends on its rivals for its own strength is a nation in chains. It is time we break those chains.
A deal for Greenland represents a decisive shift toward true independence. By securing these resources ourselves, we take the power out of the hands of our enemies and put it back where it belongs: in the hands of the American people.
Thinking Big
The media mocks ideas like this because many of them no longer believe in American leadership. I do. I believe America should lead, not follow. We should build, not beg.
The 21st century belongs to those who control energy, technology and trade routes. Greenland is the intersection of all three. Ignoring that reality is a mistake we cannot afford to make. If we fail to act, we hand our future over to our enemies. A strong America is never afraid to act decisively to protect its destiny.
