America is drowning in violence. Every night, new videos flood our phones – shootings outside clubs, executions in broad daylight, and mass killings in schools or stores. The evidence is not hidden. It is not a mystery. It is on film. We see the shooter’s face, the weapon in hand, the crime unfolding in real time.
And yet – even in these “open-and-shut” cases – our legal system drags on for decades. Appeals pile up. Families of victims sit through hearing after hearing, never getting closure. Taxpayers are stuck with the bill. And the killers? They know the game. They commit crimes knowing they can exploit the system, delay justice, and live comfortably behind bars for years before anything final happens.
It doesn’t have to be this way. When guilt is undeniable – caught on film, confirmed by witnesses, proven beyond doubt – there should be no endless appeals. One fair trial should be enough. Once a jury delivers a guilty verdict, the sentence should be carried out swiftly.
The Charlotte Light Rail Stabbing
Take the tragic case of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee riding Charlotte’s Lynx Blue Line in North Carolina. On Aug. 22, 2025, she was stabbed to death in a random, unprovoked attack. The surveillance video is undeniable: she sat quietly, a man pulled a knife, stabbed her repeatedly – including in the neck – and then walked away.
This is what we mean by an “obvious” crime. There is no ambiguity, no reasonable doubt. Yet under our current system, her killer will have years of appeals ahead – forcing her family to relive their nightmare repeatedly.
The Assassination of Charlie Kirk
The same is true in the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The nation saw the crime unfold. Witnesses, cameras, and overwhelming evidence left no mystery about who pulled the trigger. And yet, unless reforms are made, Kirk’s killer will use the same loopholes – dragging out the process, drawing media attention, and enjoying taxpayer-funded appeals while his family and supporters are denied closure.
If justice can’t be swift in cases like these, when can it be?
Why Deterrence Matters
Laws only work if punishment is certain and swift. Right now, the opposite is true. Killers know they can buy themselves 10, 15, or even 20 years of life behind bars – three meals a day, medical care, and a platform for attention.
But imagine the alternative: a system where a murder caught on camera goes to trial within months, and punishment follows immediately after a guilty verdict. That would change everything. Criminals would think twice. Deterrence isn’t cruelty – it’s mercy for future victims.
Justice for Families
No one suffers more than the families of victims. Every appeal drags them back into the nightmare. Every hearing reopens the wound. True justice doesn’t keep families chained to courtrooms for decades – it gives them closure. A swift, final sentence brings peace.
A Moral Obligation
Frederick Douglass taught that God-given rights are the foundation of justice. Life itself is sacred, and the government's highest duty is to protect it. When killers manipulate a slow, bloated legal system, they mock that duty. Swift justice honors life, restores order, and defends the innocent.
A Culture of Consequence
Our culture is broken because consequence is broken. Criminals see lenient prosecutors, endless appeals, and a system more concerned with their “rights” than with their victims. If someone is bold enough to murder in broad daylight – whether on a Charlotte train or in the assassination of Charlie Kirk – society must be bold enough to deliver swift justice.
The Way Forward
Here’s the reform America needs: in cases with overwhelming video evidence and multiple witnesses, appeals should end. One trial. One verdict. One sentence. Quick. Final. Certain.
This is not just about punishing killers – it’s about saving lives. Deterrence works when punishment is sure and swift. Our nation cannot afford endless legal delays while our streets run red.
America is at a crossroads. We can keep letting violent criminals exploit a broken system, or we can restore common sense. No appeals for obvious killers. Justice delivered swiftly. Families given peace. Communities made safer.
It is time to send a message as clear as the crimes we see on film: if you murder in cold blood, justice will be swift, certain and final. Protect life. Honor God-given rights. End the delays. Restore justice.
