Kristin Nelson and Garrett Dixon will now go head-to-head in a runoff election after neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote in Tuesday's special election primary for House District 38.
HD38 includes voters from parts of Lee and Chambers Counties. The runoff is scheduled for November 18.
According to unofficial results, Nelson was the frontrunner with 1,226 votes (46.69% of the ballots cast). Dixon finished second with 874 votes (33.28% of the vote), while Micah J. Messer came in third with 526 votes (20.03% of the vote).
“The people of House District 38 showed up in a big way today. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone’s continued support and encouragement during this campaign. But we’re not done yet," Nelson said in a written statement after the results came in.
"House District 38 deserves someone in Montgomery who will put their best foot forward and protect our conservative values. On November 18th, we’ll see you at the ballot box again, and I look forward to being your conservative voice in Montgomery.”
Dixon also released a statement expressing his gratitude to his supporters: "Thank you to everyone who voted and helped us advance to the November 18 runoff. Running for House District 38 has been a great experience, and I’m grateful for the strong support we’ve received."
"My wife, Robin, and I are raising our two children right here at home. Like so many families, we’ve felt the impact of higher prices and rising crime. I’m running because Montgomery needs leaders who will keep Alabama safe, affordable, and a place where families can build a future. As our representative, I will cut taxes, raise standards in our schools, and ensure law enforcement has the support they need to protect every neighborhood," Dixon concluded.
Alabama Republican Party chief of staff Shannon Whitt said in a release, "We congratulate all three candidates for a strong and spirited campaign. Today's results reflect the continued engagement of Republican voters in East Alabama. The upcoming runoff on November 18 will allow voters to select the nominee who will best represent their values and serve their community with dedication."
This seat was previously held by State Rep. Debbie Wood (R-Valley), who announced earlier this year that she was resigning her House seat to move to Florida.
The special general election will be held on Feb. 3, 2026.
