Baldwin County Sheriff Anthony Lowery has raised four times more campaign contributions than his opponent, Matt McKenzie.
Lowery has raised $208,908.99 in campaign funds, and his opponent, Matt McKenzie, has raised $47,059.90. According to campaign finance reports, $18,980.99 of Lowery's contributions were non-monetary. Still, he currently has $154,084.74 on hand, compared to McKenzie's $23,987.06.
Lowery was appointed sheriff by Gov. Kay Ivey after the retirement of Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack. Since his appointment, Lowery has worked with federal authorities on illegal immigration and opened the new Baldwin County Corrections Center. He has 30 years of law enforcement experience.
McKenzie is giving up his seat on the Baldwin County Commission to run for sheriff.
McKenzie, a retired Marine, has served on the Commission for 3.5 years after retiring from a 25-year career in law enforcement. McKenzie said he would focus on building trust, strengthening partnerships and improving public safety.
