
Members of the Alabama House of Representatives passed on Thursday legislation barring online political contributions from sources whose billing addresses are not in the United States.

A political action committee backed by out-of-state gambling interests has been flooding parts of the state with campaign mailers and TV ads without filing regular financial reports with the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office.

The 2025 municipal election season is underway, and new and incumbent candidates around the state have hit the campaign trail, working to win votes and raise money.

Alabama has Republican and Democrat primary elections on March 5 and Wednesday was the deadline for campaigns to file their 2023 end-of-year finance reports. The most competitive campaigns to watch this cycle are the first, second, and sixth congressional district races.

Independent journalist James O’Keefe released a video on Wednesday morning in which an alleged BlackRock Inc. employee suggested the company is purchasing politicians and profiting off of war. One Alabama lawyer, economist and think-tank leader said it’s a sign that the company has “an uncanny and nefarious ability to influence politicians.”

The Alabama Secretary of State referred 113 candidates and political actions committees (PACs) to Attorney General’s Office for violating campaign finance rules, according to Secretary of State John Merrill.

“I am a young face, but not a new face. I have spent the last two years serving on the DNC,” said Alabama Democratic Party Chair candidate Josh Coleman. “I have been head of the Young Democrats. I have been involved in campaigns at the local city council level, city wide, for the state House, and statewide.”

The Alabama Democratic Party reportedly has less than $200,000 in cash on hand going into the Nov. 8 general election.
