A Madison County special education teacher has been arrested and suspended from her position after facing accusations of torture and willful abuse of a special needs student.

Karen Yvette Howard, 60, a special education teacher at Buckhorn Middle School in Madison County, was arrested and charged on Sunday with torture and willful abuse of a child in relation to her role as a teacher at the school. She has since been suspended.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), a school resource officer received a complaint from school administrators regarding an alleged incident involving Howard and a special needs student.

The Madison County School System initiated its own investigation in collaboration with the MCSO and provided assistance, including statements and video surveillance footage.

MCSO didn't provide any details on the abuse or torture, and court records likewise offer little information as to the details of the alleged abuse. Court records state Howard was released on a $5,000 bail about two hours after being booked.

"We take allegations of assault on any student very seriously, and we are grateful for the cooperation of the school administration and the swift action taken in this matter," said Sheriff Kevin Turner. "We will continue to work closely with the school to ensure the safety and well-being of all students."
