The Alabama Marine Resources Division said recent cold temperatures killed thousands of fish along Alabama’s Gulf Coast.
“Due to the historic snow event in Coastal Alabama, some of you have experienced dead fish floating in local waterways,” the Division stated. “Unfortunately, this was an expected and unavoidable event based on the prolonged period of freezing weather that we received.”
Most of the fish killed were mullet, although other species were observed. Many of them were in shallow canals and backwaters.
The colder-than-normal temperatures for an extended period caused mass deaths.
“While this has a short negative impact on the local area, primarily dealing with the decaying carcasses, there is generally not a negative impact to the overall population,” the Division added.
