The Mobile City Council will soon hear the first reading of three resolutions that could bring the possibility of Gulf Coast Amtrak service back to the area.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson has been in talks with the state and the Alabama Port Authority for three years to help finance the service. The resolutions are a product of those talks.

The Alabama Port Authority would contribute $1 million over a three-year period. An intergovernmental agreement on the matter will be introduced on Tuesday.

The city would contribute no more than $3.048 million over three years, beginning in 2025. The council will review the agreement with the National Railroad Passenger Corporation.

The third resolution being introduced is a lease agreement between the city and the railroad service for certain property to "construct, use, maintain, operate, inspect, repair, replace and review layover tracks, crew facilities and passenger boarding platform improvements."

The resolutions will likely be voted on August 6. Council members will be able to discuss the measures during the pre-council and council meetings this week.

Stimpson said an agreement with the state could take longer to secure.

The agreements do not mention what happens after year three. Stimpson said all agreements would have to be re-evaluated after that.
