The city of Mobile was recognized as one of the most friendly cities in America by international travel magazine and website Condé Nast.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said the recognition was as nice as the people who made it happen.

"Mobile has once again earned national recognition and really our citizens have everything to do with that," Stimpson said at the Tuesday council meeting.

In 2023, the website named Mobile one of the best places to go in North America. Stimpson said Mobile is now in the international spotlight.

"The latest award proves that the people that come to Mobile are enjoying their time here," he said. "Also, citizens and businesses and many others play a big role in that but it's just tremendously important. You never know who you may be bumping into as you're walking down the sidewalk and just that friendly smiling face and making people feel welcome gives us that reputation of being that way and that reputation spreads."

The outlet said of Mobile, "If you lived next to Alabama's beautiful, underrated Gulf Coast, you'd probably be a little friendlier, right? That seems to be part of the case with the residents of Mobile, which made its debut on our friendliest cities list this year. This southern port city fell onto many travelers' radars in 2024 when Amtrak unveiled its Gulf Coast service, connecting Mobile to New Orleans (with a string of charming Mississippi towns in between). It's now easier than ever to visit this slice of Alabama—and just in time, as the city has begun respectfully highlighting its past through cultural moments such as the Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park and Clotilda: The Exhibition, a landmark show telling the story of the last ship carrying enslaved people through the lens of its survivors."

Condé Nast Traveler was first published in 1987. The magazine features luxury travel destinations.
