North Alabama native and founder of the first Moms for Liberty chapter in Alabama, Emily Jones, defeated William Matthews in Tuesday's State Board of Education Place 8 Republican runoff. Place 8 encompasses Madison and Jackson County, as well as parts of Limestone and DeKalb Counties.
Jones secured 53.5% (18,629) of the vote to Matthews' 46.5% (16,162).
"WE DID IT! Tonight, I am honored and grateful to have been elected as the Republican nominee for the Alabama State Board of Education District 8," Jones said in a social media post. "First and foremost, I thank God for His blessings, guidance, and grace throughout this journey. I am humbled by His faithfulness and the incredible support He has surrounded me with over the past 15 months."
Added Jones, "Thank you to every volunteer, donor, supporter, friend, and voter who believed in this campaign. This victory would not have been possible without you. Over the past 15 months, I've traveled across Madison, Limestone, Jackson, and DeKalb Counties meeting families, listening to concerns, and discussing the future of education in Alabama. Those conversations shaped this campaign and will continue to guide my service."
Jones will now face Democrat Shatika Armstrong in Place 8's general election on Nov. 3. The current office holder, Wayne Reynolds, announced last August that he would not be seeking re-election.
