An Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) correctional officer was placed on leave after a video surfaced showing what was potentially a fight between him and an inmate.

ADOC officials told WAFF that the inmate, 44-year-old Jimmy Norman, climbed on the roof of the prison’s chapel on September 14. Norman is serving a sentence for breaking into cars in Madison County.

Reports said that officer Ell White tried to remove him and is the one in the video repeatedly striking Norman on top of the roof.

White was placed on mandatory leave pending an investigation from the ADOC.

The ADOC said Norman is alive and “fine.”

But this is not White’s first run-in with controversy at his job.

According to an ADOC investigative report in 2017, White lied to investigators about his involvement in the death of Billy Smith after Smith was assaulted by both inmates and officers at Elmore.

The Equal Justice Initiative claimed that no justice was taken against White for this incident.
