Chambers County Republican Party chairwoman Kristin Nelson handily defeated Democratic nominee Hazel Floyd in the House District 38 special election on Tuesday night.
Per the Alabama Secretary of State Office's unofficial returns, as of 9:11 p.m. on Tuesday, Nelson had 1,860 votes (84.74%), while Floyd had 331 votes (15.08%). The office reported a 5.73% voter turnout, with 2,195 votes counted.
Nelson replaces State Rep. Debbie Wood (R-Valley), who resigned in June.
Under Alabama law, the Republican from Chambers County will be sworn into the Alabama Legislature on Thursday and get to work in the regular session immediately.
Nelson and Floyd have both qualified for the November general election for the seat.
