The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) reopened a section of Interstate 59 Northbound that had been closed for reconstruction.

The four miles between mileposts 229 and 233.5 were replaced with new concrete. The replacement of the roadway is part of a $40.8 million project between Fort Payne and Hammondville.

The next four miles to be replaced will be between mileposts 225 and 229, north of Fort Payne. ALDOT hopes to finish the project next spring.

Twenty miles of I-59 Northbound in Dekalb County and Etowah County have already been reconstructed.

The State will spend another $41 million on a project to reconstruct eight miles from Hammondville to the Georgia line. That project is expected to be completed by late 2026.

The total cost of replacing and reconstructing the corridor has been over $150 million.
