Shomari Figures will get help from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) in a close race to represent the newly redrawn second congressional district.

Figures, a Democrat, is facing off against Caroleene Dobson, a Republican. Neither are incumbents. U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) currently represents the district, but he was drawn out of it last year for the 2024 elections by a federal three-judge panel hearing litigation about the racial distribution of the Alabama Legislature’s 2021 congressional maps. Moore ended up primarying U.S. Rep Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) in the new first congressional district and won in March.

The second congressional district is expected to be a rare competitive general election for Congress in Alabama. Both national parties are focused on the race due to the slim Republican margin in the U.S. House.

The DCCC announced on Wednesday that it added Figures to its “Red to Blue” program, which means he’ll receive organizational and fundraising support. Additionally, through Red to Blue, the DCCC provides strategic guidance, staff resources, candidate training and more.

Figures was one of five candidates added to the “Red to Blue” program by the DCCC on Wednesday.

“Shomari Figures is a trusted leader who will usher in a new era of representation for Alabamans from Mobile to Montgomery. A public servant and community leader, Shomari has worked to expand quality, affordable health care and create safer communities,” said DCCC chair U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.). “This November, Shomari faces a MAGA extremist who would support a far-right agenda that bans abortion nationwide, cuts Social Security and Medicare, and raises costs for hardworking families while bailing out billionaires and big corporations.”

Drew Dickson, a Dobson for Congress campaign spokesman, said in a statement to 1819 News, "Alabamians throughout the Second Congressional District are struggling with skyrocketing inflation, unaffordable grocery prices, and continuing pain at the gas pump, but Shomari Figures and his D.C. insiders are focused on spreading lies and telling tall tales rather than offering solutions to the problems that plague us.”

"Caroleene Dobson is committed to improving the economy, creating jobs, expanding opportunities, and, most importantly, bringing the cost of groceries and other essential items back down to earth,” he added.

The general election in Alabama is November 5.
