Republican gubernatorial candidate Lindy Blanchard has staked out Huntsville as a place of special focus for her campaign for governor. Blanchard stated recently that she has close ties to the Huntsville community.
“I’m Alabama born and raised, but Huntsville has a special place in my heart,” Blanchard said. “My family has deep roots in the Rocket City, and I’ve been coming here for decades. It is where my father's family lived my whole life. My uncle, military veteran General John Scales, still lives on Monte Sano Mountain. It’s one of my favorite places to visit and look out over the city lights.
“Huntsville is full of things to love – like our veterans, rockets, science and technology. We know some of the biggest challenges in our nation’s history - from getting to the moon to keeping our nation secure - found their answers by way of Huntsville. It has always risen to the challenge!”
Blanchard went into further detail regarding her focus on Huntsville, including events with the Madison County Republican Men's Club, the Huntsville Express Republican Women, the Republican Women of Huntsville, small businesses like Alabama Glad and Banner and Gibson's BBQ, the Rocket City Trash Pandas baseball team, local veterans, and the Rocket City Welcome at Ditto Landing.
“While serving as our country’s ambassador appointed by President Trump, I had the opportunity to help my home state of Alabama and our state's economy," said Blanchard. "I returned to Huntsville from Slovenia to broker a deal to sell our Alabama defense products from Redstone Arsenal to our NATO partners in Europe worth millions. The ambassadorship gave me great insight into the challenges and opportunities those in the military and our defense field are facing. Having been briefed at the Pentagon, at NATO, and at European Command, I’m ready to get to work with our defense operations, Space Force, and all of our military bases here in Alabama.
“I’m not just going to talk the talk and only deliver during election season like most politicians. I’m going to deliver results year-round that will help our children succeed, strengthen our business environment, and return money to the pockets of hard-working Alabamians from day one. You have my commitment to work hard every day to be the leader our state deserves!”
Huntsville recently surpassed Birmingham to become the largest city in Alabama. It was one of the few areas where incumbent Gov. Kay Ivey underperformed in 2018, so it could potentially be a place where a challenger could do well.
Blanchard is a businesswoman, philanthropist and former ambassador to Slovenia. She and her family reside in Pike Road in Montgomery County.
Blanchard, Lew Burdette, Stacy George, Ivey, Tim James, Donald Trent Jones, Dean Odle, Dave Thomas, and Dean Young are all running for the Republican nomination for governor on May 24.
