State Rep. Mack Butler (R-Rainbow City) is one of the Alabama lawmakers vowing to address the recent drama at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Space Camp through the legislative process.

On Monday, Alabama lawmakers and thousands of others responded to reports from Huntsville-based Clay Yarbrough, who learned that Molly Bowman, a biological male who identifies as a female, would be working in the overnight camp he planned to send his daughter.

Yarbrough included several screenshots from Bowman's social media, which was filled with hyper-sexual commentary.

The responses varied, with many showing disgust for the Space Camp and others supporting Bowman, saying he did nothing wrong.

Some lawmakers have already addressed legislative fixes to allowing transgender individuals to spend time in traditionally female-only spaces.

In a recent social media post, Butler said he would amend his already controversial bill prohibiting teachers from leading discussions or teaching instruction regarding sexual orientation and gender identity to add a specific reference to Space Camp.

“FYI please know we have a plan to address the Space Camp situation and we will address it next week,” Butler wrote. “HB 130 expands our existing K-5 sexual identity and sexual orientation ban to K-12 and we will have an amendment adding Space Camp. This bill will be voted on next week in Education Policy.”

House Bill 130 (HB130) would “provide that classroom instruction or discussions related to gender identity or sexual orientation may not be provided to public school students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.”

The House Education Policy Committee held a public hearing on HB130 last week. The Alabama GOP, Moms For Liberty, Eagle Forum and the Alabama Policy Institute supported the bill. Several residents from across the state spoke against it, as did several Democratic lawmakers on the committee.
