U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) defended the Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Wednesday after Alabama Democrats chair Randy Kelley accused the group of hijacking the delegate selection process for the party’s August convention in Chicago.
Kelley accused the DNC Tuesday of engaging in “racial shenanigans” by appointing delegates to the party’s upcoming convention rather than allowing Alabama Democrats to elect their preferred delegate candidates.
Kelley said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, “The Alabama Democratic Party has been hijacked, undermined, and discriminated against by the Democratic National Committee.”
Sewell, Alabama’s lone Democrat in Congress, defended the DNC on Wednesday in a statement to WSFA.
“Alabama’s Democratic delegates were selected in accordance with rules of the DNC and the Alabama Democratic Party as outlined in their delegate selection plan,” Sewell said. “We are proud of the diverse slate of delegates and look forward to continuing to work with Democrats in Alabama to support President Biden’s reelection.”
The party’s national convention is scheduled for August 19-22.
