As speculation grows around who will replace U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) as he runs for governor, the outgoing senator said he's confident a qualified, true Republican will emerge to continue his legacy.
Tuberville told Newsmax on Tuesday that he would not be endorsing a candidate, but he did promise President Donald Trump that his replacement would back the president's agenda, just as he has.
"I think it's going to be a toss-up," Tuberville said on Newsmax TV's "The Chris Salcedo Show." "You're going to have four or five people get in. Maybe a couple of congressional members might jump in, [the] attorney general in the state of Alabama. There will be somebody good."
He continued, "I promised President Trump, he said, if you leave, you've got to get me somebody that's going to stand behind me and the American people just like you have, and I'm going to do that. I'm going to fight to do that. I won't endorse anybody, but I'm going to work hard to make sure that whoever we have in there that's going to win this race is going to work with Katie Britt, our other senator, and continue to make this country great because President Trump is going to need help. We've got a lot of people up here that are RINOs. They're not standing behind him. You see it every day. I see it every day. We cannot allow that to happen and continue to happen, especially from states like Alabama."
Several prominent names have been touted as potential Senate candidates, including U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), former AL-2 candidate Caroleene Dobson and Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall and former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson are the only candidates to have officially announced their campaigns so far.
