Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced his plan to run for U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville's (R-Auburn) soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat on Thursday.

Marshall, who was term-limited as attorney general, told the Washington Examiner that Alabama was "very blessed" to have Tuberville as senator. He added that his work as attorney general "makes it abundantly clear" that he would be a good fit in Washington, D.C.

"We're very blessed in having a leader like Sen. Tuberville to be in the role that he was in," Marshall told the outlet.

"Right now, the nation needs strong conservative leadership, somebody that's going to be able to advance President Trump's agenda," he continued. "And the work that I've done as attorney general, I think, makes it abundantly clear that I'm willing to fight the right battles and to be effective in doing it, and look forward to being able to take that to the Senate."

In an exclusive with the Washington Examiner, Marshall highlighted the lawsuits he led to combat the Biden administration's "radical gender ideology" and decision to "parole" immigrants into the United States.

"Look, some people talk tough. We've had an opportunity to get tough stuff done," Marshall stated. "I relish the opportunity to be able to contrast that with others that may be in the race."

Just over a year ago, Marshall and Tuberville joined President Donald Trump in a Manhattan courtroom to show support during the president's hush money trial. Marshall said he'd never seen a "greater perversion of the criminal justice system" than what he saw at the trial.

Marshall said he would seek Trump's endorsement, but he said his record of support for the president was clear.

"We'll absolutely seek his endorsement, but I think one thing that is clear is that we have been one of the strongest supporters of the president on the issues that he has championed," Marshall told the outlet.

Marshall acknowledged there was a long way to go until the primary, but he told the Washington Examiner that it gave him sufficient time to learn what Alabamians wanted and expected from their U.S. Senator.

"It's a little bit of a long haul for us," he said. "It's about a year from the primary, which gives me an awful lot of time to be able to see and share what we're doing — and candidly, to be able to learn a little more about what the people of Alabama expect and want of me in the role of senator, as opposed to what they've seen from me as their attorney general."

Former Navy SEAL and business owner Jared Hudson is the only other candidate to announce for Tuberville's seat. Other names being rumored to be considering entering the fray include: U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl and D.C. insider Morgan Murphy.
