Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, the 2018 Democratic Party gubernatorial nominee, isn't buying the damage control campaign underway to rescue President Joe Biden's 2024 reelection bid.

On Sunday, CBS News revealed a survey showing that nearly 75% of all registered voters said that the incumbent president should not be running for a second term.

Maddox said the effort to dismiss Biden's poor performance as a one-off bad debate would not work.

"The @CBSNewsPoll is further affirmation that voters view Thursday night’s debate as more than just an off night by @JoeBiden," Maddox wrote on social media. "Voters cannot unsee what they saw nor will it be forgotten. IMO, passing Thursday’s debate off as Reagan’s (1984) or @BarackObama’s (2012) bad nights are an apples to beach balls comparisons."

Maddox's take was in direct contrast to his mayoral colleague, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.

Reed blamed the "style of the presidential debate" for Biden's struggles.

"Stop overreacting to the style of this presidential debate," Reed posted on social media. "It’s not a beauty contest. It’s June and Joe Biden will shut down the naysayers by November. Again. "
