Tuskegee University is taking extra steps for safety following a shooting that left one dead and 16 injured. Gunfire erupted as the historically black university was celebrating its 100th homecoming.
18-year-old La'Tavion Johnson, of Troy, who was not a student, was the teen killed. At least one of those injured was in critical condition. Four of those injured sustained injuries by means other than gunfire.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) arrested Jaquez Myrick, 25, of Montgomery. He is charged with the federal charge of being in possession of a machine gun.
Tuskegee University President Dr. Mark A. Brown announced the campus security chief was relieved of his duties. The chief has been replaced, but the name of the new chief has not been released.
The university was closed on Monday and Tuesday for mental health days. In-person and virtual grief counselors are being made available.
Brown said only one entrance to the school would remain open, and all must have a university ID to enter.
"Tuskegee University is no longer an open campus," he said.
All vehicles involved in the investigation are still on campus and cannot be picked up until further notice.
