The Jefferson County Coroner-Medical Examiner’s Office released details on two inmates who died two days apart at William Donaldson Correctional Facility.
Hudson Dontavious Swanson, 36, was found unresponsive in a prison day space Friday. A postmortem exam showed no signs of trauma, and the coroner does not suspect foul play.
Swanson was serving time for robbery and sexual assault from a 2007 case out of Montgomery County. According to court documents, Swanson forcibly removed a woman’s clothing in 2006 and fondled her.
On Sunday morning, Walter Maul, 59, died in the prison infirmary, where the coroner said he was being treated for a “significant, natural disease.”
Maul was serving a life sentence for a 1981 conviction of first-degree rape. Court records reveal Maul was involved in a gang rape of a girl in Jefferson County in 1979. He was given life without parole due to being a habitual offender.
The Alabama Department of Corrections’ Law Enforcement Division is investigating both deaths.
