MONTGOMERY — Even to the untrained eye, former President Donald Trump faces an asymmetrical battlefield in his bid to win the presidential election.
That was the case in his previous two efforts, one successful and one not, as pointed out by U.S. Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) during remarks at Friday's Alabama Republican Party Summer Dinner.
Hagerty, identified as Alabama's third U.S. Senator by ALGOP chairman John Wahl, said Trump had acknowledged this and that he believed Trump was the best candidate suited for those conditions.
"Everything they touch is inflated and spun in the media," he said. "I will share this with you — when I won my race in 2020, President Trump called me. He congratulated me. I said, 'Sir, the way it looks right now, you're 700,000 votes ahead in Pennsylvania, I'll be calling you tonight to be congratulating you as well."
"You know what he said?" Hagerty continued. "He said, 'Bill, Joe Biden was never really my opponent. My opponent was the media and Big Tech. Let that sink in. This isn't an even fight. It isn't a fair fight. But we have a candidate who can deliver against these odds, a candidate that can take a beating like any of us have ever seen, whether it is a courtroom or it is an assassination attempt."
"He gets up, he stands up and continues to fight for us," he added.
