The U.S. Department of Homeland Security paused its plans this week to create a “Disinformation Governance Board,” which Republicans had derisively called the “Ministry of Truth” in reference to an agency in George Orwell’s novel 1984.
Congressman Mike Rogers (R-AL03) released a statement on the reported pause of the proposal which Rogers called “Biden’s anti-free speech ‘Disinformation Governance Board.'"
“The Biden administration is so desperate to get folks to stop talking about their failed leadership that they tried to create an actual ‘Ministry of Truth’ to police free speech," Rogers said. "My colleagues and I immediately introduced legislation to defund this socialist anti-free speech scheme and got the Department of Homeland Security to shut it down. Now, the Department of Homeland Security should take all funding meant for the ‘Ministry of Truth’ and direct it towards securing our border and finishing President Trump’s border wall.”
Rogers and House Republicans had already introduced a bill to immediately defund the Biden Administration’s 'Ministry of Truth.'
“The creation of a Disinformation Governance Board is a violation of our First Amendment rights,” Rogers said. “I’m glad to join my colleagues in introducing a bill to immediately defund Biden’s Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth.’ The government should have no role in policing free speech.”
The Disinformation Governance Board was to be headed by Executive Director Nina Jankowicz.
Jankowicz has referred to herself as the “Mary Poppins of Disinformation.” Rogers and House Republicans claim that she is a frequent purveyor of falsehoods and appears sympathetic to the cause of censoring Americans.
Rogers listed what he called "recent falsehoods" peddled by the Biden Administration: the falsehood that Secretary Mayorkas has done an effective job managing the border crisis; the falsehood that economic contraction in Q1 of 2022 is actually hiding broad economic resiliency; the falsehood that Biden’s $3.5 trillion spending bill costs zero dollars; the falsehood that inflation is a “high-class problem”; and the falsehood that 70% of our current inflation is actually being caused by Vladimir Putin.
Rogers was joined by over 45 representatives from across the country in sponsoring the legislation to defund the Disinformation Governance Board.
Rogers faces Pell City plumber Michael Joiner in the Republican primary on May 24. Rogers is presently serving in his tenth term representing Alabama’s Third Congressional District.
The winner will face Democratic nominee Lin Veasey in the Nov. 8 general election.
