Yelp, an online review website, listed each state’s best ice cream, based on user ratings. In Alabama, the winner was Big Spoon Creamery on 3rd Avenue South, in downtown Birmingham.
Big Spoon Creamery was founded by Geri-Martha and Ryan O’Hara, who both worked together as chefs at Bottega, in Birmingham. The business started as an ice cream trike and is now a full-service ice cream shop with locations in Avondale and Homewood.
“Big Spoon Creamery is a small batch, artisan ice cream company, and we are seriously passionate about our craft,” the company states on its website. “Our philosophy and approach to ice cream comes from the principles and values we learned through our experiences working in restaurants. Our primary goal is to create a menu focusing on seasonal flavors using local ingredients, as well as bringing a new, innovative approach to the classics.“
Since July 17 is National Ice Cream Day, Yelp put together the list of the best ratings in each state. The website used the numbers of ratings from businesses in the ice cream category and ranked those spots based on several factors including reviews from April 21, 2021, to April 21, 2022.
