After lawmakers advanced two pieces of legislation that would compel a special election in specific congressional and State Senate districts, all eyes are on the U.S. Supreme Court to see if the state wasted time and money in this recent special session.

The full trial of Allen v. Milligan, the state’s battle over congressional redistricting, is slated to kick off on Feb. 10, 2025, to rule on the constitutionality of lawmakers’ 2023 map that was thrown out by federal judges ahead of the 2024 general election.

Allen v. Milligan will have a precedential effect on other redistricting battles going on around the country and these cases, taken together, could significantly impact the political landscape after the 2024 elections.

Alabama will have to redraw its districting map and be subject to another game of judicial peek-a-boo.
