As the contentious 2024 presidential election looms, Alabama Senate Republicans are hoping to outlaw ballot harvesting in one of the first bills put forward this session.
At a Thursday press conference, AL-2 congressional candidate State Sen. Merika Coleman (D-Birmingham) announced plans to file legislation to make police bodycam footage public record. She is dedicating the legislation to a man killed by Mobile police in July.
U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) said she was “excited” on Tuesday for Alabama to redraw its congressional district map following a U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) case earlier this month that requires Alabama lawmakers to create a majority (or close to majority) black congressional district.
If Terri Sewell wants to remain in the U.S. House of Representatives, she has her work cut out. But the challenge could come long before the November 2024 general election.
State Sen. Jay Hovey (R-Auburn) said on Tuesday that “people are going to try to politicize” the Dadeville shooting, but “we’re never going to be able to legislate morality.”
